Alpha Module: Letters and Sounds of Greek

In this module you will learn the Greek alphabet and begin to learn the sounds of Greek so that the language will begin to become less foreign to you. You will also learn other general matters of importance regarding how Greek appears in modern texts.

Orientation

The suggested approach to this module is first to read carefully Lesson 1 in Black, Learn to Read New Testament Greek (hereafter Learn).

Then study the module notes, taking notice of elements that supplement Black's discussion.

You will need to acquire the following knowledge and skills in this module:

  • Know the alphabet by heart: be able to recite the names of the letters, in order, without any hesitation.

  • Name the Greek letters: associate the visual configuration of each letter with its name.

  • Sound the Greek letters: associate a proper sound (or sounds) with each letter so that you can pronounce Greek words.

  • Classify Greek consonants: be familiar with the classification of consonants.

  • Other matters of importance: recognize other features of the way Greek is written in modern texts.

Alpha Module Notes
These module notes are intended to supplement Lesson 1 in Black, Learn.

The notes fall into four categories:

(1) Greek Alphabet

An introduction to all of the letters of the Greek alphabet.

(2) Sounds of Greek

Take a closer look at the sounds of Greek consonants, vowels, and diphthongs.

(3) Marks in the Greek Text

Breathing marks, accents, and punctuation marks will be briefly discussed.

(4) Writing/Typing/Transliterating Greek

Learn how to handwrite as well as type Greek!

When you think you have mastered the material in this module, you may take the Alpha Module Quiz.

Assignments
  • Read Black, Learn, Chapter 1.
  • Read the Alpha Module Notes.
  • Complete all of the exercises in §11 in Black, Learn (7-8), being careful to aim at accomplishing the stated goals in the Orientation section to the left.
  • Select your favorite verse from the GNT and transliterate it into English. Find a partner within your team and exchange your transliterations within the Teams folder (without revealing the scripture references!). Each of you should render the transliteration you have received back into Greek (do not forget breathing marks), and then check each other's work.
  • Take the Alpha Module Quiz.
Extras
  • Black suggests reading about the history of the Greek language (Learn §11e). Read chapter 14 in David Alan Black, It's Still Greek to Me. If you find a helpful article on the web, post a link to it in our collaborative classroom.
  • Practice Drills. Here are some practice drills designed to help you master what is introduced in this module.
