THE GREEK VERB "TO BE":
EIMI

Present Indicative of EIMI
The formation of the Greek verb "to be" is irregular, as seems to be the case in most languages. You must simply commit the conjugation of EIMI to memory.

PRESENT INDICATIVE OF EIMI

  Singular Plural
1 eivmi, I am evsme,n we are
2 ei= you are evste, you are
3 evsti,$n% he, she, it is eivsi,$n% they are

Parsing the Present Indicative of EIMI
Recall from your reading in Black (Learn §23) that the Greek verb "to be" (as in any language) expresses a state of being, not an action, and therefore does not have voice. This is why we speak, NOT of the present active (or passive or middle) of EIMI, but simply of the present indicative of EIMI.

When parsing in a table one simply leaves the Voice column blank:

Form Tense Voice Mood Person Number Lexical Entry
evsme,n pres   ind 1 pl eivmi, I am

When parsing aloud, you say:

Future indicative first person plural of
eivmi,, "I am."
