Epsilon Module: First and Second Declension Adjectives

This module will deal with that part of speech that adds vividness and detail to speech: adjectives.

Orientation
You will be happy to know that this module will not require you to memorize any endings. The endings you have already learned for first and second declension nouns will be used with the adjectives we will be studying. However, you must make certain that you are thoroughly famililiar with the nominal suffixes learned up to this point.

Besides learning a number of adjectives in the vocabulary for this module, you will have to learn a few grammatical rules regarding how they are used.

Vocabulary

Audio introduction to Chapter 6 vocabulary (§46 in Black, Learn, 43).

A note on two-termination adjectives:
Black (Learn, §43) notes that two-termination adjectives frequently include compound adjectives. Observe that a very common type of compound adjective is one that is prefixed with the so-called alpha-privative. This is the prefix
av- (as in avka, qartoj), used as a negative compounding element, much like the a in English words such as atheism or atypical (or like the English prefixes in- or un-). Adjectives with an alpha-privative prefix will nearly always be of the two-termination type.

Epsilon Module Notes

Chapter 6 is one of the few chapters in Black that I really cannot improve upon or supplement.

However, I am providing a flowchart that may help you learn the use of adjectives:

Use of Adjectives Flowchart (HTML - IE 4.xx or higher)

Assignments
  • Read Black, Learn, Chapter 6.
  • Learn the vocabulary in §45 (Black, Learn, 43).
  • Read the Epsilon Module Notes.
  • Learn the three uses of the adjective: substantive, attributive, predicative.
  • Take the Epsilon Module Quiz.
  • Do the exercises in §47c (Black, Learn, 44).
  • Greek composition exercise. Create five English sentences that utilize the different uses of adjectives and, of course, are reflective of vocabulary learned to date. Team members should then render these sentences into Greek.
Extras
  • Audio for exercises in §47c (Black, Learn, 44):
  • Use of Adjectives Flowchart: Word or PowerPoint 2000.
