Eta Module: Prepositions and Personal Pronouns

Here we will look at two of the basic building blocks of nearly any Greek sentence: prepositions and personal pronouns.

Orientation
Because we will be looking at two chapters in Black's text for this module, it may seem somewhat daunting. Not to worry. You will not have to master everything in these chapters within the space of a week (this goes especially for the chapter on prepositions, Chapter 8). For this reason, you must read carefully the overall plan that I shall presently outline, and follow carefully the steps enumerated under Assignments.

(1) First, you will need to familiarize yourself with the material in Chapter 8 (Black, Learn). Read the chapter, paying special attention to §61 regarding compound verbs. I want you to put to memory the vocabulary in §62d (compound verbs). Start learning the remaining vocabulary (§62a-c, prepositions), and keep reviewing them until the time of our mid-term examination. You will not be quizzed over §62a-c in this module. My rationale for this: I think it is better for you to get a feel for how these prepositions work over a longer period of time, as you study them using flashcards (or whatever method you use) and see them used in sentences. That way the varying uses will better germinate in your mind. You will need to have the vocabulary in §62a-c mastered for the mid-term, however.

(2) Second, you will need to focus your attention on learning the material in Chapter 9 (Black, Learn). Read this chapter carefully. You will need to memorize the pronoun declensions in §64a, b, and c. The last one (§64c) will be a snap, since you already know the first and second declension endings. The quiz for this module will test your mastery of these pronoun declensions. The only tricky part of this module may concern the special uses of auvto,j. Study §66 until you are clear about the several uses. I also think you will find the sentences from the GNT in §67 to be most helpful in observing the uses of all of the pronouns under consideration in this module.

Vocabulary

Chapter 8 and 9 vocabulary (§62 and §68 in Black, Learn, 57-58, 65).

Eta Module Notes
Because Black's treatment in Chapters 8 and 9 is more than adequate, what will appear here will only be some "visual aids" to help you assimilate some of the material better.

The first four items are probably the most useful when printed out.

(1) Pictorial Examples of Prepositions  -1-   -2-

(2) Spatial Basics of Prepositions

(3) Flowchart: Uses of AUTOS (Verbs)

(4) Flowchart: Uses of AUTOS (Nouns)

(5) Morphological Summary

The symbols of the Evangelists
from the Book of Kells.

Assignments
  • Read Black, Learn, Chapter 8, paying special attention to §61 (Compound Verbs).
  • Read Black, Learn, Chapter 9, making sure you study the uses of auvto,j in §66.
  • Memorize the vocabulary in §62d (Black, Learn, 58), and begin to study the vocabulary in §62a-c.
  • Memorize the vocabulary in §68.
  • Memorize the personal pronoun declensions in §64a-c.
  • Read the Eta Module Notes.
  • Do the extra exercises from the Greek New Testament (07GNT-LastFirst.doc). Alternatively, your team may decide to do the following exercises in §63c: 1, 4, 5, 6, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21.
  • Do all of the exercises in §69c. You do NOT need to do any parsing, except for any morphology you feel you need to refresh.
  • Take the Eta Module Quiz.
