Iota Module: Demonstrative Pronouns

Pointing things out, near and far: Demonstrative pronouns!

Orientation
Now that you have completed your Mid-Term Exam, it is time for a little breather. This module will probably seem pretty easy compared to many we have encountered before. In your study of demonstrative pronouns you will discover that there is very little new morphology to learn, and the rules of syntax for their usage are a snap!

The module notes on this webpage will add a little more detail concerning how the "near" demonstrative is formed. Otherwise, Black's discussion in Chapter 11 is excellent, and replete with examples from the GNT.

In addition, however, I have provided a review of the basic uses of the conjunction kai,, as well as a more detailed discussion of the uses of a conjunction introduced in the last module, o[ti.

Iota Module Notes
These module notes supplement material in Black, Learn, Chapter 11.

(1) Form and Function of Demonstratives

(2) More on Conjunctions: uses of kai, and o[ti.

Assignments
  • Read Black, Learn, Chapter 11.
  • Learn the vocabulary in §79 (Black, Learn, 76).
  • Read the Iota Module Notes.
  • Review the uses of all the prepositions we have been introduced to: Appendix 7 in Black (Learn, 219) provides a handy list.
  • Complete ALL the exercises in §80c (Black, Learn, 77).
  • Take the Iota Module Quiz. This will include a sampling of the prepositions we have had up until now. You should be able to identify not only basic meanings for prepositions, but the cases with which they are associated.
